“Our daddy is turning into a girl” – a father of two has transformed himself into a woman after eight years of marriage.
James Cohen, 35, told his wife, Eirian, 35, that he wanted to become a woman just four months ago.
Before sitting down to watch TV together, James admitted that he was a woman inside and had felt this way since he was a child.
James, from Leeds, who is now known as Kara, has been an electric and gas engineer his whole life.
Eirian has described Kara as always having been a man’s man, with not one feminine thing about him before her transition.
Despite her husband now being a woman, Eirian still lives with Kara and their children and now sees him as her best friend.
Eirian, the actress and business owner, said: “It was a huge shock when James told me he wanted to be known as Kara.
“We’ve been married for eight years and have two daughters together.
“Before his transition he was a man’s man, a typical bloke with a hands on job and in his spare time, he loved football.
“But I have accepted that he is now a woman and we’ve since become best friends.
“We were sitting down to watch TV and she turned around and said that she was transgender.
“I was very accepting, and I felt that it didn’t have to change anything. I wanted us to work everything out together, I was so proud that she was able to finally be who she wanted to be and not hide away from the world.
“There was not one thing people could say that was even slightly feminine about her.
“She always wore jeans and a t-shirt and she never put any effort into her appearance.”
Eirian and her husband James romantically eloped to Jamaica in 2009 and got married- they then went on to have two girls, Seren, 7 and Electra, 6.
The mum of two claims that although her and her husband had a loving and fun relationship – she always knew there was something that James then, wasn’t admitting.
She added: “We have always had a very honest relationship but I always knew there something she wasn’t admitting.
“She kept saying she didn’t know who she was, then she would change the subject and didn’t want to tell me what she meant.
“When we got married she seemed to be quite obsessed with my wedding dress, and she wanted to try it on as a laugh.
“It was a very jokey thing to see if it fit him. It was him taking the mick! Other than that, there was no other signs.”
Eirian claims despite her husband’s shocking revelation, she will continue living with Kara and will not break up the family over it.
Eirian said: “Initially I wanted to stay together romantically, but when my husband started taking hormones, before she even changed appearance wise, my attraction towards her changed.
“I was really shocked with myself, but when I told her, she looked relieved and said that we could both do with some space to figure out who she is.
“Although I have now lost my husband, I have gained an amazing best friend, I am still very much in love with her but as a best friend.
“We are not separating in any way, we still sleep in the same bed, it can be of course be a bit weird at times, but we get on so well.
“We are looking to move house where we will probably get two different rooms for the new house but we are keeping the family together and are still going to live with each other.
“Our kids think it is just amazing, they love her so much more as a girl.
“They have told the world about it and even their school has been so supportive.”
Kara now enjoys wearing pencil skirts, leggings and jeans.
Eirian and Kara were shocked when they found out there was a four year waiting list for hormones, as well as an extremely high rate of suicide for transgender women that are waiting on those lists.
Instead they decided to fork out more money on prescribed hormones from a registered GP that specialises in transgender transitions – Kara has been on hormones for six weeks.
Eirian said: “We started doing research into hormones and found out there is a four year waiting list.
“I can see why they are unhappy, the fact that they have had to wait their whole life to come to terms with being a woman and then they have to wait another four years, it must be torture.
“When Kara tried on these shiny lycra leggings, I have never known someone could be that excited in their entire life.
“I don’t think I have ever seen someone as happy she has been.
“For anyone that may criticise me, I would say to them that she is my best friend and we have an amazing connection.
“There’s absolutely no need to spilt the family up, it doesn’t matter what society thinks, as long as we are happy.”
Eirian has now wrote a book called ‘Stop giving a F**k’, which is going to be released later this year. She hopes it will inspire people to live their lives without worrying about the criticism and judgment of others.
“I have managed to turn something like this into a positive, instead of letting it destroy me. I hope I can inspire other women in my position to do the same too.”
Kara said: “I feel very lucky to have such a supportive family and an intelligent open minded wife.
“I’m finally able to be my authentic self and the future looks so much brighter since coming out.”
