A giant leatherback sea turtle was saved by a group of locals from poachers who planned on selling the endangered species – after the activists BOUGHT it back from the poachers.
Eco-friendly activist, Doyinsola Agunye, was called by local security guard Ola who stopped the poachers in Ikate, Lekki, Lagos Nigeria, on Sunday [Feb 3].
The videos show how enormous the sea turtle is who appears to be distressed as he is lost and surrounded by people, on Kids Beach Garden which is a sustainable beach.
She said: “We got a call from Ola, the local head of the of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) they are known as local security.
“He supposedly found the poachers who were willing to sell the giant sea turtle, but he stopped them as he knew of Kids Beach Garden rescuing species before.
“The poachers wanted over £1,000 (500,000 Niara) but we managed to negotiate it down to £43 (20,000 Niara), it took over two hours for us to get this price.
“At this point, the sea turtle was so distressed but we watched her as she waded along the pounding surf of the Atlantic Ocean again.”
