This nerdy entertainer combined her two loves of Star Wars and dancing to create a bizarre audience favourite – the belly dancing Wookie.
You don’t have to go to a galaxy far, far away to see a Wookie belly dancing with your own eyes – you just need to pay a visit to Raks Geek, in Chicago, Illinois.
Owner and founder Dawn Xiana Moon loves Star Wars and dancing – so, naturally, she decided to combine the two.
Sporting a full-body, movie-quality Chewbacca costume, Dawn pops her hips and shakes her behind in the furry outfit, which is adorned with a glitzy bra and flowing sarong.
Costing in excess of 1,000GBP (1,500USD), the quirky performance piece has become a fan favourite among audiences members and is now a staple of the show.
Though Dawn claims she did wants to retire the character, fans were given A NEW HOPE when she spoke to The Wizard of Odd TV about her crazy conception.
Speaking at local venue Uptown Underground, Dawn said: “Raks Geek is a nerd-themed belly dance and fire performance company that’s based here in Chicago.
“A puppeteer friend of mine helped me modify the Wookie outfit.
“She painted the Wookie’s lips so it looks like it has lipstick on.
“[In the costume] I do tribal fusion belly dance.
“I was born in Singapore and I moved to the US when I was really young.
“I’m a little bit of a fusion creature, and dance is a really flexible thing that allows me to incorporate different pieces of my background together and make it a new art-form.
“So it’s really fun for me to combine the dance I really love, with all of my nerdy interests.
“We have a tradition of closing every show with the Wookie.
“People would be really upset if I stopped doing the Wookie in some form.
“I had people come to the show more than five times just to see it.”
