Doctors in India have removed an incredible 203 date pips from the stomach of a four-year-old boy.
Jiban Ruidas, from a village in Hoogly, was brought to Bardwan Medical College in West Bengal 12 days ago.
The youngster had been crying incessantly due to sharp pain in his stomach.
Doctors took an ultrasound and CT scan of whole abdomen and found a ‘ring shaped’ metallic foreign body and a huge cluster of what they believed were ‘stones’.
But when a team of 12 doctors performed the surgery, they were shocked to find 203 date fruit seeds along with and iron nut and pieces of cloth in his intestine.
Dr Narendranath Mukherjee, Professor Departement of Surgery, said: “The child had been suffering for the last two months.
“His illiterate parents told us that the boy had the habit of swallowing things but were unaware of what he was swallowing.”
The doctors performed an entereotromy – an incision into the lumen of a segment of small intestine – and removed the foreign bodies in a three hour operation.
Dr Mukherjee said: “The surgery wasn’t complicated but we were extra cautious because of the age of the patient.
“It is definitely a rare case, one we haven’t heard of before.
“It seems the child needs a psychologist’s help and we will provide him counselling once he completely recovers.
“He is recovering fast and we are monitoring his condition.”
