A bizarre moment captured on camera shows an Indian cobra regurgitating onions.
The venomous snake, which was nearly four feet in length, was rescued from the the house of Susanta Behera in a village Chendipada in Angul in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, on Sunday afternoon.
Visuals show the reptile regurgitating two onions while Himanshu Sekhar Dehury, a volunteer with Snake Helpline – an NGO involved in rescuing snakes in the state – holds it by its tail.
In total, the reptile regurgitated 11 whole onions and a dead toad.
Mr Himanshu explained: “Before I could work out what was happening, the cobra started to regurgitate the onions fast.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes as the cobra regurgitated 11 onions and a toad.
“I was dumbfounded but I immediately realised that this is an unusual thing.
“I gave my mobile phone to my friend who could shot the last two onions being regurgitated out of the mouth of the cobra.”
The unusual scene was witnessed by scores of villagers, who had gathered at the spot.
The cobra, soon after regurgitating the onions and the toad, was released into its natural habitat.
Subhendu Mallik, General Secretary of Snake Helpline, said this is the first of case they have witnessed in years of cobra swallowing onions.
Subhendu said: “Although snakes are carnivorous in nature, at times they swallow such items like fruits or vegetables if they find the odour of their prey on it.”
