Staff from a Walmart store held a funeral for a bird who had nested in their garden department and died after tragically flying into a window.
The video shows the group from the Walmart Supercenter in Lake Wylie, South Carolina, on March 26, as they bury a hole for the bird that has been placed in a box, even throwing flowers on the ‘casket’ and performing a ‘water gun’ salute.
The footage was filmed by, Alexander Cunningham Torbett, 22, a Lawn & Garden Sales Associate at Walmart, that shows staff member Charlie, holding a moment silence to remember the bird.
Alexander said: “We have some birds that have nested inside the garden department at the store, and on that morning, one of them tried to fly out, but it hit the window and died.
“I had the idea of a funeral for the bird since it was a boring day, and Charlie thought it was a great idea.
“So I put together the small ‘casket’ which was actually an old case for Walmart signage I believe and I wrote “Birdy you will be missed” on it.
“Charlie and I went around and told people that we would be having a funeral for a bird behind the store at 3:00 PM. Only he and I went out there and started digging the hole, but then everybody you see in the video showed up, which was pretty exciting, since we assumed they’d just think we were joking when we told them.”
Alexander had found the bird after hearing a bang as it tried to fly out of the automatic doors of the store.
He said: “I thought it was pretty funny, but at the same time I thought it was nice to give the bird a proper burial instead of throwing it in the trash.
“When I was walking back inside after the service I saw my assistant manager roaming the garden center and I thought “uh oh”.
“He didn’t know what we were doing, so we told him about the video and he ended up saying it was a very nice thing to do.”
