These shocking images show the horrific scale of plastic pollution as a riverbed is clogged with litter.
Thousands of plastic bottles cover every inch of the ground blocking theWestern Siberian river.
A spring thaw meant the water went down in the Pivovarka River in Barnaul and this stretch became entirely blocked by a layer of rubbish.
Stunned local Aleksey Kurelionok filmed the disgusting scene and the footage quickly went viral.
Shamed local authorities then cleared the litter allowing the water to return within hours.
Aleksey said: By the evening after we had posted the video we got information the local authorities organise students for a big clean up.
“People just throw their rubbish into the river – that is the mentality of a certain part of our society.
“I think it has been caused by the natural shape of the river as it narrows and so acts like a filter.
“It is unacceptable and we will do all we can to make it clean and prevent things like this in the future.
“So we are going to organise an “ecological action” group to keep it clean.
“Our target is to make people think about our ecology, to make them sort rubbish, it’s not that hard at all. It is our country, our nature and our and our kids’ future.”
Plastic waste in our waters was highlighted in BBC’s Blue Planet II and sparked government action against the blight.
It is estimated there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish by 2050.
