A daredevil white van driver has been caught on camera slamming on the brakes so hard his vehicle tipped forward into a ‘headstand’.
Dramatic footage filmed in Christchurch, New Zealand, at about 12.30am on Sunday morning [Jan 28] reveals the dangerous stunt – known as a ‘stoppie’ – nearly backfiring on the driver when the van was left balancing vertically on its bonnet and almost tipped completely upside down.
The video has racked up more than 121,000 views since it was posted to social media by a shocked bystander – who said there was no harm done as no one was injured – shortly after he filmed it.
New Zealand Police confirmed they were aware of the video and would ‘follow up as is appropriate’.
The 21-year-old Christchurch mechanic who filmed the video, who asked not to be named, said: “We were just parked up just spinning yarns, standing there.
“All of a sudden this van came out of nowhere and started doing stoppies.
“I thought ‘f**k, he is going on his roof’.
“We thought it was going to flip and we would have to push it back over. But the bar at the front of the bonnet stopped it from going over completely.
“We didn’t know who the driver was – we just thought it was hilarious.
“Obviously there is a probably a little danger in it but he was just having fun and no one was hurt.
“There was no one running out in the road or anything like that. So there was no harm done.
“There were quite a few people around when it happened – probably about 40 people witnessed it.
“Most people who have watched the video have been saying it is pretty funny.
“Someone said ‘the cops are going to love this when they see it’ but there was no harm done, it was just a bit of fun.”
A spokesman for New Zealand Police said: “Police is aware of the video and will follow up as appropriate.”
