Today (WEDS) it was announced 61 per cent of the country had voted in support of same sex marriage with more than 12 million postal votes returned.

And hairdresser Mykey O’Halloran – who has been offering his customers free multi-coloured hair to support the yes campaign – celebrated by dying dozens of men’s beards in rainbow shades for free.

Mykey, 26, who lives in Melbourne, Victoria, said: “In high school, if I wore colour in my hair I would get punched in the face. It showed me how important it is to have freedom of expression.

“That’s just one of many times I’ve been beaten for being who I am. But I’m not toning it down for anyone.

“I’ve been blown away with the response. There are so many people willing to do this, and have no shame in showing their true colours. Even my gran got rainbow hair!

“Today brought for me a feeling of acceptance for the first time on paper as 61 per cent of the country said yes.

” I’m going to keep going until I run out of dye!”

Mykey, who grew up in Noosa, Queensland, claims he was a victim of homophobic violence when he dyed his hair in high school.

The experience drove him to show his true colours – literally – with scissors and dye and he is now famous for his colourful hair creations.

Mykey’s reach has stretched beyond the LGBT community with even his 77-year-old grandmother having her hair dyed in rainbow shades to support the Yes campaign.

He added: “At this time in history, it’s never been more important for people to freely express their support for marriage equality.

“I had a bit of a lightbulb moment, when I decided to start using my creativity to support the LBQTI community and people have really warmed to it.

“People should show their true colours with pride. It’s not just gay and lesbian people getting involved.”
