A hairdresser attacked by homophobic bullies as a teenager is now supporting gay marriage in a unique way – by creating amazing rainbow ‘unicorn’ hair.
Yes campaigner Mykey O’Halloran, from Melbourne, Victoria, has offered his customers free multi-coloured hair styling throughout Australia’s same sex marriage survey so people can show where they stand.
Pro-equality campaigners Down Under are holding their breath as the votes are counted to decide if same sex-marriage will be enshrined in law, with the result poised to be announced next Wednesday.
But Mykey said he is only just getting started on his quest to brighten anyone who trusts him with scissors and dye.
The colourful character, who grew up in Noosa, Queensland, said: “At this time in history, it’s never been more important for people to freely express their support for marriage equality.
“I had a bit of a lightbulb moment, when I decided to start using my creativity to support the LBQTI community and people have really warmed to it.
“People should show their true colours with pride. It’s not just gay and lesbian people getting involved.”
Snapshots show his stunning creations, which include shocks of pink and green, rainbows shaved into the side heads and Australian flags like you’ve never seen them before.
Mykey, 26, said he was a victim of homophobic violence when he dyed his hair in highs school, driving him to value the importance of freedom of expression.
And he said he has been bowled over by the response, which stretches far beyond the LBQTI community into all walks of life – including his 77-year-old grandmother.
Mykey, who has also launched a #wearyouryes hashtag to promote the campaign, added: “In high school, if I wore colour in my hair I would get punched in the face. It showed me how important it is to have freedom of expression.
“That’s just one of many times I’ve been beaten for being who I am. But I’m not toning it down for anyone.
“I’m blown away with the response. There are so many people willing to do this, and have no shame in showing their true colours. Even my gran got rainbow hair!
“I encourage other people to wear their yes while the votes are being tallied, so celebrate and get your hair coloured. I’m going to keep going until I run out of dye!”
