A yoga instructor has been killed after a coconut tree fell on her as she went out for an early morning walk in India – just months after she had signed a petition for the tree to be felled.
Kanchan Nath, 57, from Mumbai in western India, had gone out for a morning walk on July 22nd, when suddenly a giant coconut tree fell on her.
The hair-raising incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed in the vicinity.
In the gruesome video, Nath, an ex-TV anchor is seen wearing a blue t-shirt and black trousers, passing through some stores when without a warning, a tree comes crashing on her. She instantly collapses on the ground a passersby rushed to help her.
She was taken to a local hospital where she was admitted in ICU but later succumbed to head injuries.
Nath’s husband Rajat said: “The incident took place very early morning, if it was little an hour late so many school children use that road, they could have come under it.”
In a bizarre twist, the couple along with other residents in the area hadpetitioned authorities to cut the tree down, as it had been precariously leaning towards ground several months.
But the officials had cleared the tree as ‘healthy’ and claimed it had another ten years of life.
Her husband added: “We had filed an application filed to cut the same tree on February 17 this year.
“However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials had inspected the tree and told the applicant it was still healthy and will stand for ten years.
“However just after the inspection this incident took place. Because of the negligence of some officials my wife lost her life. A case should be registered for murder charges against the officials,” the heartbroken husband added.
So far, no report has been registered by police as the investigation is still ongoing.
