A hungry heron snaffles a brown water snake and winds it around his nose in a predatory attack.
The black-headed heron is pictured capturing the slithery creature in grassland and wrapping it around his huge beak.
Although the snake hangs on for dear life, it eventually gives up the fight and is devoured in the nature reserve in Pretoria, South Africa.
Rodney van Soest, 62, who snapped the action, said: “It was difficult to get the pictures with all the excitement.
“It shows that you need to be patient and cannot hurry nature. I hoped that nobody scared the bird away by mistake.
“Sometimes you just have to be at the right place at the right time, but most of all be patient.”
