A photographer with a passion for decaying buildings has captured a hauntingly beautiful series of images of crumbling theatres across the USA after the final curtain has fallen.

Matt Lambros, a photographer from Brooklyn, New York, has created a series of beautiful images depicting abandoned theatre across America since 2009.

The eerie but stunning pictures show the dilapidated buildings with decaying paintwork and crumbling architecture and it's hard to believe these were once places of glamour and grandeur.

Lambros says that most of the theatres he visited were originally part of an asylum but he never saw them as dark or sinister. He said: "The theatres were always my favourite part of the building."

Lambros had a habit of sneaking into an abandoned buildings from a young age but says it never occurred to him that he should be documenting them until recently. He also says that many people are surprised by his photography and don't even know these theatres exist: "I get a lot of emails from people who walk by one of these theatres on a daily basis, but didn't realise anything was left."

The photographer struggles to pick one as his favourite as he says he has captured over 100 images of different theatres but he does say: "If I had to choose one it would be the before and after restoration series of the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn."

He said: "Seeing theatres in a state of disrepair is sad, and this will sound weird, but I like the way buildings decay."

Lambros is also keen to help get these old theatres restored to their original state: "Nothing makes me happier than seeing one of the places I've photographed restored and reused. I try to work with organizations that are trying to restore theatres whenever I can."

The buildings are riddled with history and the photographer describes how the Prospect Theatre in Brooklyn has some famous connections, such as comedian, Ted Healy who performed his stage show The Three Stooges there.
