A teenager has released horrifying footage of the Stromboli eruption that he captured as he sailed by on a boat.
Student Luca Mariani, 14, from Rome, filmed the moment the smoke cloud towered over the island-volcano, which was also ravaged by fire and lava today, July 3.
Luca, who was sailing with his family in the Mediterranean Sea at the time of the eruption, said: “I had never seen something like this.
“I didn’t know whether to be scared or excited.”
One death and one injury caused by the eruption have been reported so far, while beachgoers on the island jumped into the sea to escape ashes and rock fragments falling down from the mountain.
It was one of the most violent Stromboli eruptions ever registered according to the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, which monitors the volcano’s activity.
