A 36-year-old woman has been left battling for life after being attacked by her husband with acid following a row over dowry.
Sangeeta Verma was about to leave for work when she was attacked by her husband and in-laws with acid after an argument over dowry turned ugly.
Sangeeta was admitted to a hospital in New Delhi, India, after the attack on April 13, with over 90 percent burns to her body.
“Her husband and in-laws were harassing her, physically and mentally, and demanding a dowry of two million rupees (£24000),” alleged the victim’s brother Pradeep Verma.
At the hospital, Sangeeta’s body has been wrapped in large swathes of fabric bandages.
“Last week, I received a call at around noon from Sangeeta’s in-laws saying she had suffered burns. We all rushed to her house and took her to the nearby hospital in Ghaziabad,” said Verma.
“Looking at her extensively burnt body, doctors there referred us to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi,” Verma added.
Sangeeta, who is a teacher, was in a marriage of 15 years and has two young sons.
Doctors at the hospital say chances of Sangeeta’s survival are ‘slim’.
