A motorist has been caught on film trying to get out of a four hour motorway queue after a serious crash – by driving the WRONG WAY down the hard shoulder.
Back seat passenger John Armitage filmed the blue Mercedes driving towards the exit they had just missed on Saturday night [Mar 30] after all lanes were closed near Junction 37 of the southbound M1 in Barnsley, South Yorks.
John – who sent his footage to the police – said the road had been closed after a smash which saw a man with serious injuries taken to hospital and drivers stuck in four-hour tailbacks.
He said the blue Mercedes was chased down the hard shoulder by a woman who is believed to have got out of the same car.
John said: “The road was closed following an incident.
“The passenger had exited the car and was walking along the hard shoulder too.
“To the many motorists who were temporarily inconvenienced by the hold up, once they got moving again their issues disappeared, unlike the others associated with the incident.
“But it is morons like the driver videoed that causes the worst accidents.
“The video has been submitted to South Yorkshire police for them to investigate the incident and hopefully explain to the driver the dangers of driving the wrong way along a motorway hard shoulder.
“My thoughts are with anyone involved in the original crash.”
South Yorkshire Police have released an appeal in regards to the crash, which involved two other Mercedes cars.
They have not yet commented specifically on John’s dashcam footage.
A spokesman for the force said: “Officers are appealing for witnesses following a two car collision on the M1 over the weekend.
“At around 5.25pm on Saturday 30 March, it was reported that a black Mercedes CLS250, travelling southbound along the M1 between junction 37-36, was in collision with a grey Mercedes CLA220, travelling in the same direction.
“The black Mercedes is then said to have hit a bridge on the carriageway before coming to a stop.
“A 54-year-old man driving the car was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He currently remains in a serious but stable condition.
“A 41-year-old man driving the grey Mercedes also suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.”
