An appalled surfer picked up a huge pile of plastic objects from the ocean surface – during a paddle lasting just minutes.
Rebecca Gilmore hit the ocean with her surf board in Bali, Indonesia, earlier this month but soon realised she was swimming through a sea of plastic.
Footage shows Rebecca picking up some of the objects that were floating around her, including plastic bags and straws.
She quickly got discouraged and rushed back to shore.
Rebecca said: “I don’t think the video even shows the scale of what was actually out there, there was so much floating past me I couldn’t pick it up quick enough.
“The best way to describe my experience was surfing in a plastic soup.
“I felt incredibly disconnected from the ocean.
“The ocean is somewhere I normally go to feel more connected to nature, but this time I couldn’t wait to get out.”
