Amateur snapper Gonzalo Javier Santile, 46, spent the last two years capturing these rare shots of the galaxy as it arced over the deserts of Argentina in Salta Cafayate, Cordoba Valle de Punilla, Provincia de Buenos Aires and the Rio Negro province.

In his pictures, the Milky Way can be admired as it towers over canyons, cacti, bushes and even small brooks and lakes.

Gonzalo, from Villa Carlos Paz Cordoba in Argentina, said: “I enjoyed the process – going out at night, taking food with me, seeing the sky and analysing the forecast.

“Later, I enjoy being in the place of the shoot completely alone, surrounded only by the cries of nocturnal animals such as foxes, owls and pumas, with the cold or the humidity of a warm summer night.”
