This stunning property would allow its buyer live, work and play in New York City, before taking a one-hour trip back their their own PRIVATE ISLAND.
The perfect contrast to life in the Big Apple’s concrete jungle, the $12.9 million USD (£9.9 million GBP) listing comes with not one but two homes – both designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
Known as Petre Island, the private property, in Mahopac, New York, features both an eye-catching four bedroom home overlooking the lake, as well as a 1950’s guest cottage.
Jutting over Lake Mahopac, the abode also comes with its very own helipad and a boat dock – not to mention Wright’s trademark clean lines, geometric woodwork, and a direct tie between home and nature.
Since being listed in 2017, Petre Island has been on and off the market, having initially priced at $15 million USD (£11.5 million GBP).
Interestingly, some purists in the design world also refuse to accept the home as a true Lloyd Wright property.
According to reports, Wright was commissioned to build the home on behalf of a an engineer, Ahmed Chahroudi, back in 1949.
Wright was reported to have originally drawn plans for a 5,000-square-foot house, but when it was then revealed that the owner could not afford the complete home, the project resulted in the smaller, 1,200-square-foot cottage being built.
Years later, the island was bought by John Massaro, who then oversaw Wright’s original plans come to life, with the larger home being completed in 2007.
Margaret Harrington, the listing agent for Douglas Elliman, speaking of her favourite features, said: “The spectacular views and the feeling of being in a boat from every room is what most impresses visitors.
“The home is totally integrated into its setting and is artfully cantilevered over the great rock forms that form its foundation.
“Total privacy, hiking trails, a private beach add to the many pleasures of this special spot.
Speaking of the ideal buyer, Margaret suggested: “Buyers seeking a truly unique home, architecture enthusiasts and those who are seeking a supremely private retreat but want to be in close proximity to NYC.
“The helicopter pad is an added bonus as few homes in the region offer this.”
