These images show the captivating moment a group of millions of sardines formed into a massive “bait ball”.

Taken by scuba instructor Jun V Lao, the photos show the spherical shape created as the swarms of fish joined together, almost engulfing an astonished diver.

The images were taken in Moalboal in the Philippines earlier this year – and Jun said he was truly awestruck by what he saw.

He said: “I’m often awestruck by the wonders of nature, but the sardine shoal of Moalboal is probably the best place on earth to witness how epic nature really is underwater.

“I’ve been diving for close to eleven years and I make it a point to drop by Moalboal at least once a year to see this awesome spectacle of nature.”
