This astonishing time lapse footage shows the moment Mount Etna started to violently erupt.
The footage, which was taken by Giuseppe Distefano, 39, and Marco Restivo, 32, shows the eruption around three sides of Etna near the villages of Zafferana Etnea, Nicolosi, Milo, Fornazzo, Sant’alfio.
Violent volcanic explosions can be seen amid the thunderous sound of volcanic ash being strewn from the volcano’s mouth.
The eruption earlier this week was the first major one at the volcano on the island of Sicily since August following an increase in activity in craters near the volcano’s summit.
Giuseppe said: “This is normal activity for Mount Etna but we were surprised when we understood the position of this new crater, in a very steep area close to Valle del Bove.
“We are following the evolutions day by day and we are waiting the next step of this eruption.”
