A sleazy thief has been caught stealing more than £7,000 (€8,000) in hard cash at the Fiumicino airport in Rome before hiding it inside a toilet roll holder.
The offence was carried out on December 8 at the expense of a Pakistani citizen whose money was to pay for a sick relative’s medical care, Italian police have said.
In the CCTV footage from Polizia di Stato, the middle-aged criminal can be seen approaching the security scanners, leaving his bag and coat in the basket and getting in front of the queue as his victim is busy with further controls.
At minute one, as he’s waiting for his bag, the thief appears to notice the two envelopes and casually pick them up.
To add insult to injury, he proceeds to nonchalantly tie his jumper around his neck as the victim notices the money isn’t there and starts to panic.
As the video shows, the unfortunate Pakistani man even got told off by staffers at the airport as he was rummaging through the baskets.
Police arrested the thief shortly thereafter as he was boarding a flight to Russia, and he’s now been sentenced to a year in prison.
His plan was allegedly to take back the envelopes from the toilet roll holder upon his return, provided that no lucky toilet user would have picked them up while reaching for a sheet.
