This talented artist has a rather unique way of bringing to life his vibrant celebrity portraits – creating them using hundreds of individually twisted RUBIK’S CUBES.
To date, Giovanni Contardi has use the classic puzzle to create portraits of Justin Timberlake, Robert Downey Jr., Will Smith, Dave Grohl, and others.
Each work can take talented Giovanni, 24, weeks to create, with the average portrait consisting for around 700 individually shaped cubes.
Having been solving Rubik’s cubes for the past 10 years and working on such portraits for five of those, Giovanni made working on this art form his full-time job in September 2018.
When working with a private gallery, Giovanni said, he will frame his completed works to viewed by others – the completed portraits usually measuring five-feet-by-five-feet
On other occasions, however, the Italian artist will simply destroy his works after they have been completed, retwisting the cubes into a different portrait in time.
He said: “In general, I like to create portraits of people I’m inspired by at that moment of my life.
“These are mostly linked to pop culture – it could be an actor from a movie I really enjoyed, or a musician I’m currently listening to.“
In this last case, I really enjoy creating the design while listening to his or her music, as it helps me better interpret the persona with the cubes.
“I’m lucky enough to say the reaction is always positive.
“Everyone knows what a Rubik’s cube is, but nobody expects it to be used as a form of art.
“People are now excited to see their idols being portrayed with the cubes, and I receive many messages with recommendations from the fans, so I would say they are very engaged.”
