This is the shocking moment an 82ft-long portion of an Indian British-era road caved in and submerged into a lake.

Dramatic video shows a cracked portion of the Lower Mall Road in the heart of Nainital city in the northern India state of Uttarakhand, along with a grilled parapet wall, suddenly collapsing into Naini Lake at around 5:30pm on Saturday.

Fortunately, no vehicles were driving over the road when it caved in. Soon after the incident, officials from various departments rushed to the spot to inspect the damaged road.

Abhishek Ruhela, sub-divisional magistrate, said: “Incessant rainfall over the past few days in Nainital is possibly the cause of this cave in.

“Fortunately, the incident didn’t cause any harm to any human or a vehicle.”

Traffic on the route, which leads to a famous hill station, was greatly disrupted after the incident.

Local claimed the road caved in due to negligence on the part of the authorities.

One resident alleged: “The cracks had started to appear on the road since last year but the authorities had delayed the repair work.”

Mall road, which is parallel to famous Naini Lake, was constructed during the British-era and connects two ends of Nainital, Tallital and Mallital.
