A hungry snake was caught on camera interrupting two mating toads in the throes of passion – before devouring the female.

Taken in Tbilisi, Georgia by Katiya Pavlova, a maths professor, the footage shows how the snake tries to wedge itself between the two toads, while the male toad still attempts to mate with the female.

Katiya said: “It is likely that the male was already in the process of fertilising the female eggs when the snake started swallowing the female.

“The male would not let go of the female and was trying to hold on to the plants sticking out of the water to stop moving.

“At first we did not understand what was going on. We only saw two toads moving along the surface of the water in a completely unnatural manner.

“We were very puzzled until we saw that it was actually the snake that was propelling the duo!”

Katiya said she had a blast filming the natural phenomenon.

She said: “I was very happy to be able to witness such an event.

“Most likely the snake ended up eating the female.

“I have seen snakes eat single frogs before, but nothing like that!”
