Forget pampered pooches – later this week, these mangy mutts will battle it out to be crowned THE WORLD’S UGLIEST DOG.
The annual contest will take place at the Sonoma-Marin Fair, Petluma, California, on Saturday, June 23, bringing in entrants from far and wide.
So far, contestants include hounds with eye issues, bad fur, irregular body shapes – not to mention sticking-out tongues galore.
The winner of the 30-year-old contents will receive a prize of 1500USD (1132GBP) as well as a tonne of media attention, including a trip to New York City for television appearances.
Past winners have come from states such as California, Arizona, Minnesota and Washington, and the dogs in this year’s contest will be judged in four categories.
Those categories are: First Impression, Special or Unusual Attributes, Personality, and Audience Impression.
The key message of the contest, however, is not to poke fun at the dog’s on show; it’s to “Advocate, Adopt, Adore,” organizers said.
With placed contestants also taking home prize money, this year the competition started a prize match system, whereby each placing contestant will select a dog rescue or non-profit as its benefactor.
Christy Gentry, publicist for the Sonoma-Marin Fair, said “Throughout the years the winner takes on a celebrity status.
“One of our past winners even met Donald Trump.
“Aside from our amazing competing pups, the media attention plays a huge role in the dogs exposure.
“Our fans love the contest. This is the cinderella story for pups.
“So many have been rescued or adopted, that it is really about true love seeing past the pedigree.”
