These animals rescuers went from saving one dog to an entire family, after an elusive nursing mother led them around the forest to find her stranded pups.
The team at Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) have seen it all when it comes to helping stray dogs, but even they were left stunned on April 11th, when a feeding trip of abandoned dogs in the area lead to an accidental family rescue.
Spotting a female dog clearly full of milk, Natalie Thompson and her team were lead into the forest by the stray terrier-blend, who was attempting to lead them to her puppies, including one who had fallen into a pipe.
Rescuing all four of the litter in a series of swoops, the shabby pups soon calmed down in the rescue team’s presence, happily wagging their tales in the back of Natalie’s car.
Quickly losing daylight, Natalie and co. had to prolong the attempted rescue of the mother and an older dog, believed to be from a previous littler, until the next day.
An additional twenty four hours later, and the entire family were reunited again under the care of SRSL.
The family, having been on the streets for their entire lives, will undergo extensive training and rehabilitation before being readied for adoption.
Natalie said: “We were just feeding strays when we spotted a female who was full of milk and obviously nursing.
“The puppies were running and hiding in the wood – they were all terrified of us.
“This was definitely their first-ever human interaction, but as soon as we got them in the jeep they were wagging their tales.
“They have heartworms and need to be sprayed.
“They were also on the thin side but not emaciated.
“All the dogs will soon be adopted to their own families.
“They have lived on the streets their whole lives, so out training and rehabilitation team is working with them to ease the transition.”
