You could live like Hollywood star Cary Grant in this California waterfront mansion for $12 million (£8.5M)
The former home of stars Cary Grant, Howard Hughes, Irving Berlin, Sharon Tate and Princess Grace of Monaco is on the market for the first time in nearly 40 years.
Located on Palisades Beach Road in Santa Monica, California, USA, the ‘movie star beach colony’ during Cary Grant’s time.
This 11,000-square-foot French Normandy estate, built in 1929, comes with five bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms as well as many high-end French style features.
These includes a four-car garage, a courtyard with a fountain, a sunroom overlooking the back garden, a built-in pool and a tennis court just steps away from Santa Monica Beach.
What is rare among properties built in the 1920s is the fact that it was barely modernized and still has the original bathrooms.
Jade Mills, the listing agent with Caldwell Banker Global Luxury, said: “There are so many original 1929 features in this house including tiles, doors, sconces and even the bathrooms.
“Most homes this old have been torn apart and completely modernized.
“I think that people who really appreciate 1920s architecture are the ones who are going to be most excited about this. It’s just so amazing that so many of the materials are actually from the late 20s.
“People are interested in how celebrities live, especially ones like Cary Grant and Howard Hughes. There is so much celebrity history here.
“Back in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, it was all famous actors along this strip.
“It’s not every day that you see a house on the beach with a tennis court and pool.”
While the mansion has mainly been lived in by movie stars, Jade says you do not need to be a celebrity to live here.
Royce and Jennifer Diener, who have resided at the property ever since they bought it for $750,000 in 1979, have been the first non-famous owners and Jade says it could be a good fit for any family or couple with a $12 million (£8.5M) budget.
Jade said: “The audience is enormous because it has enough bedrooms for a family but it’s also great for a couple. It’s perfect for entertaining guests.
“It’s in great proximity to Santa Monica restaurants and shopping and there’s a spectacular view of the pier.”
Based on what she has seen so far, Jade expects it to sell very quickly.
Jade said: “We’ve had a very good amount of activity and a few requests to come see it. I’m assuming it will sell quickly.”
