Their gaping jaws open wide, and appear to try and eat the camera, clearly mistaking it for a tasty snack.

William Drumm, 31, took the breath-taking footage in Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

William, from Denver, Colorado, US, said: “During certain times of the year, the currents bring lots of plankton to the area of Isla Mujeres, so huge filter feeders like whale sharks and manta rays come in large numbers to eat the plankton

“On some days there will be dozens and dozens of whale sharks and manta rays all in the same small area of water too.

“The whale sharks are huge, ranging from around 15ft in size to over 40ft.

“It’s such a treat to interact with animals of this scale.

“It was amazing, if a little scary, to be right with them as they open their huge mouths, and I love that you can see the little fish swimming around inside there too – it just shows you big the sharks actually are.”
