A diver has captured shocking footage of a SUPER-SIZED STINGRAY the size of a shark on the ocean bed that looks like an ALIEN.
Stefano Ulivi, 42, couldn’t believe his eyes upon realising the large rock he was approaching was in fact a ginormous flying saucer-like giant of the ocean.
He was diving in the waters surrounding Azores in the Pico Islands, when he discovered the super-sized stingray believed to be up to three metres (9ft 8) – the equivalent of a shark or dolphin.
While trying to get a better view of the massive monster dwelling at 20 metres below sea level, the alien-looking stingray spotted him and within seconds vanished from sight as its fins flapped it away to safety.
Stefano, from Florence, Italy, filmed the footage four-months-ago within a metre of the stingray and says he still can’t believe the how large the beast beneath the waters was.
Known scientifically as the Myliobatoidei, the seafloor dwellers can live for up to 25 years and typically can grows up to two metres (6.5ft) in length.
Stefano, a videographer, said: “During the dive we were looking for this kind of stingray, I was checking the area and I saw this strange, giant rock I’d never seen before.
“After a few seconds I realized that it wasn’t a rock, it was a sea creature, actually a giant stingray.
“Normally I approach them along the sand, I tried not to scare them stingray and use the rocks to hide myself but without success.
“There was only a rock between us, we were about a metre apart but when I saw him he started swimming away and I was worried only about the tail.
“They have a big knife in the end of the tail and it’s their weapon and they can kill you in one shot.
“Usually when we are looking for this kind of sting ray we expect them to be one metre or a maximum of 1.5 metres in length – this one was so huge, it was at least three metres.
“From his head to the end of his tail I believe the stingray was that size, it was as big as some of the sharks, dolphins and manta rays I’ve seen.
“When you compare the stingray to other fishes, when you are watching this huge round body literally fly in the middle of the water, it’s like you’re in front of an alien.
“While we were looking for this kind of stingray, I have never seen one as big as this.
“It made me realise that you never know what can happen when you’re are in the depths of the ocean.
“All the divers they were with me in the water in that moment, but back at the centre they were super excited, laughing and screaming while watching my video.”
