A daredevil Manchester United fan has revealed footage of the moment he ‘got one over’ and ‘conquered’ his team’s derby rivals – when and his pals scaled the Etihad football stadium ROOF.
Adam Marr was out with fellow parkour mates when they decided to scale the City of Manchester Stadium on August 27 when he captured the ‘once in a lifetime’ moment.
The 24-year-old and the gang of explorers managed to bypass security, jump the gate and climb all the way to the roof.
Footage shows the group scaling the roof without climbing equipment for breath-taking views over the flood-lit stadium as security guards scurry down below.
Adam said: “It was amazing – you can’t put money on an experience like that.
“While I primarily did it for the views and the experience, I’m a United fan so it was nice to ‘conquer’ our rivals in another way.
“It’s funny to think that a United fan, who City fans would see as their arch nemesis, has been to the top of their stadium when not one of their supporters has. It was good to get one over on them.
“I’ve had a City experience that no Blues fan has had, which is quite funny and one I will happily rub in the faces of my mates who are City supporters.
“I’m not a thrill seeker, though. I didn’t do it for a rush – I just did it because it was a nice view and a once in a lifetime experience.
“When we got up there it was just completely calm.
“Security did a good job to catch us but we were just better. When we started running from security we knew what we were doing – we were only there to take pictures.
“My friend Ally has gone viral before with his parkour videos so I thought I’d beat him to it.
“He does a lot of viral videos of him climbing and stuff.
“For the most part climbing to the top of the Etihad stadium was their idea but I just didn’t want them to do it without me – I didn’t want to get left out.
“So when we climbed over the little wall a security guard spotted us – so we just sprinted off into the stadium.
“We saw a hatch and at first we thought it wasn’t open. I remember thinking we were rumbled.
“I thought the hatch at the top of the stadium was locked because the latch wouldn’t open.
“We all were like ‘it’s locked’ ‘it’s locked’ but then we just realised it was really heavy. My friend just pushed it a little bit and we all made it to the roof.”
Video footage reveals the stunning panoramic view of Manchester viewed from the top of the Etihad – a feat Adam claims nobody, other than workmen, has ever achieved before.
Adam said: “So when we all got to the roof we looked down and saw police and security walking around on the ground. They looked like little black dots from up there.
“If you look about three minutes into the video you can just see one guy standing there all by himself – and security were walking around the outside of the grounds.
“It took the police a good 15 to 20 minutes to make their way up to the roof. We were probably up there for about twenty or thirty minutes.
“I think when they realised we weren’t there to blow stuff up they relaxed a little bit. They questioned us for two hours.
“They were running background checks and making sure we weren’t terrorists.
“It was just a once in a lifetime experience.”
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 1.45am on Sunday 27 August 2017, police were called to reports that a group of people had entered the grounds of the Etihad Stadium and gained entry to the roof.
“Officers attended and were at the grounds for a significant time until seven people safely came down from the roof.
“Police are treating it as a public nuisance incident and enquiries are ongoing.”
