Now that’s what you call a trunk road!! Motorists in South Africa were left stunned when their commute was interrupted by an angry ELEPHANT blocking the road.
The African giant brought the traffic to a standstill, as motorists stopped to avoid the elephant marvel at the sight.
Clearly annoyed by having its trip disturbed, the elephant then charged several onlookers, as well as rangers trying to coax it back in a reserve.
Eventually, the elephant appeared to get bored of his commute and battered down the reserve’s gate to return to safer ground.
The scene was captured by South African photographer Mario Paul on the main road between Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa, near Kruger National Park.
The 27-year-old said: “It was a very strange situation with all the people getting out of their cars to look. I don’t think they realised how dangerous it was.
“I was on my way to visit some people when I saw the elephant, and stopped well ahead of it. It was a big surprise, and it had clearly escaped from a reserve.
“I saw several vehicles try to get past the elephant when it was in the road, but it was not happy about it and it charged them.
“He would not let himself be pushed off the road either, and he charged the rangers who were trying to help.
“People were running away. It caused quite a bit of disruption.
“In the end they managed to get him to go towards the reserve and he broke back through the gate in the electric fence.”
