Indians are known worldwide for their ‘fiery’ taste buds but one man has kicked his fetish for chillies a notch higher.
Pyare Mohan is addicted to chillies, so much that he eats three kilos of hot peppers a day.
Be it fresh green chillies, red hot pepper, black pepper or fine chilly powder, the 40-year-old father of three is not satiated until he chews them down as a side meal.
“My hunger does not die until I eat chillies. The hot the chillies the better they are.
“I need at least a kilo with my meal. I take them instead of salads. I ask my wife to make food very spicy and keep adding chillies to it to make it hot.
“Without chillies I do not feel I have eaten food!” Mohan boasts.
Mohan’s incredible appetite has made him a mini celebrity in his tiny village in Madhya Pradesh in central India.
People come from far and wide to catch a glimpse of Mohan as he sits with his meal and a plateful of chillies every day.
“They treat me like a celebrity. They are in awe of my ability to eat chillies. Every day there is at least ten people standing outside my house who ask me to show them if the rumours are true,” says Mohan, who makes a measly income from playing musical instruments at weddings.
Surprisingly, despite the overindulgence the man has never complained of upset stomach or has fallen sick.
Instead, he says chillies bring benefit to his health.
“I find the taste of chillies really sweet. I do not find them hot at all.
“It has been six years now that I am eating chillies every day but not even once have I fallen sick.
“In fact, I feel it is because of my staple diet of chillies that I am healthy and active,” Mohan adds.
