A shocked couple woke up to find a shirtless man asleep in their front garden after a VE Day street party got out of hand.
Claire Wildsmith, 46, and her husband Kevin Wildsmith, 56, were gobsmacked to spot the unknown teenager laid on the front lawn of their house in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, last Saturday [May 9].
Worried the young man, later identified as Aaron Hallcro, 19, could burn in the 18°C heat, the couple tried to wake him only for him to stumble around and collapse back on the grass.
Self-employed tradesman Aaron was eventually identified and collected by friends, who had been driving around searching for him, after the couple posted a photo of him on Facebook which went viral – racking up thousands of likes and shares.
Cheeky Aaron, who had been drinking at a socially-distanced VE Day street party taking place a 15-minute walk away, blamed the incident on a homemade batch of cocktail ‘sex on the beach’ and said he had no memory of how he ended up at the couple’s house.
Claire said: “It was just after 10am and Kevin shouted that there was someone out the front of the house.
“When I saw him I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t expect him to be flat out in the garden.
“I thought it was something to do with my daughter Kayleigh, but she didn’t have a clue who he was.
“She said we should wake him up, but I was like ‘you can’t approach him because of Covid-19.’
“Eventually I went out and woke him up, but he just started stumbling and dancing around and collapsed back down on the grass.”
Unsure what to do, Claire tried to shield Aaron from the heat by covering him in his t-shirt he’d left folded on their front wall and a fitted sheet – but he pulled them off himself.
Meanwhile friends of Aaron began to comment on a photo of him she had posted online – saying they believed the man in her garden was their friend who had gone missing after a VE day street party the previous evening.
Claire dropped a bottle of fizzy water and a bag of crisps next to Aaron in case he woke up and waited inside until just after midday when his three friends arrived to take him home.
She said: “We didn’t know who he was or anything and the neighbours were having a good little giggle.
“I took him a bottle of fizzy water and a packet of crisps and he was rolling around trying to get the sun on him.
“I was worried that he would get sunburnt and wondered whether I should get some suntan lotion to cover him up.
Kevin added: “There were people on Facebook saying I should have called the police, but we didn’t want to get him arrested. We wanted to wake him up and find his parents.
“Our dogs had been in the front garden the day before and I was worried he would be rolling around in dog poo.”
Aaron has now thanked the couple for taking care of him while he was sleeping in their garden.
He said: “I was out for VE Day and I had a few too many.
“I’d had a big jug of homemade sex on the beach and I’d got an eight pack of Stella.
“I had a good night and I had put my t-shirt neat and tidy on the wall as I can’t have wanted it on me.
“When I woke up, I didn’t know where I was. I didn’t know whose house I was at.
“I must have just thought this looks somewhere comfy to sleep.
“My friends have just laughed at it really. It has just been really funny.”
