The incredible moment newborn turtles made their way into the ocean for the first time has been captured on film.
Thomas O’Neill and his wife were on their honeymoon in Riviera Maya, Mexico, on December 2 when they were invited to witness the release of newly hatched turtles into the sea.
Thomas begins the video on the shoreline as a man has a bucket with all 12 of the turtles ready for release.
With a little persuasion, the first turtle touches the sand and begins scuttling towards the water and eventually floating and swimming in the sea.
One-by-one the minuscule reptiles make their way to the ocean as tourists and locals watch on.
Some hatchlings go into the sea through Thomas’ legs as they power into the depths of the sea.
Thomas said: “The turtles were amazing and it felt so good to see them get out to sea safely.
“I don’t know too much about it, but turtles that lay their eggs on the beach get taken to the nursery where they are safe from birds and other predators until the evening when they can be safely released.
“My reaction when I saw the turtles was pure joy.
“We saw all of the turtles make it into the ocean safely and swim out of sight.”
