Here’s the rare footage of a baby elephant being taught a tough lesson.
The video, which features a young calf being thrown around by a bull elephant, has emerged after a group of tourists visited the Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa.
The heart-breaking footage shows the baby elephant being knocked over and wailing after it got in the way of the frisky bull elephant during mating season.
Jeni Smithies, a nature guide, and Lloyd Carter, a photographer, witnessed the ordeal at the waterhole and managed to capture the unfortunate events.
Jeni said: “I began to video the scene, not knowing that I would capture extremely rare footage of a bull taking out his frustration on the calf that was in his way.”
Captured back in February this year, the video shows the bull initially ‘guiding’ the calf with his trunk and then lifting him up in the air.
The baby elephant cries out as he is thrown to the ground.
Jeni said:“I was convinced that he was going to crush the calf, we were complexed as to what his intentions were.”
Eventually the bull is distracted by the sight of a female elephant and runs off to do what nature intended.
Jeni added: “Elephants are usually very protective and we have never seen a bull mishandle a calf. I firmly believe that it was sheer sexual frustration.
“The calf was in his way and with severely heightened testosterone levels, he simply took out his frustration on what was between him and all the cows.”
