A colour changing lizard switches shades while shedding its skin.

Michael Edelen runs a reptile rescue called Cold Blooded & Bizarre in Charlotte, North Carolina, and his shop has the perfect name as this Cuban knight anole attests.

While the reptile’s skin is shedding, timelapse footage shows the lizard’s skin switches between a dark brown and vibrant lime green almost at will.

Michael said: “It is normal for them to change colour, primarily because of emotions.

“It is probably the excitement of getting itchy old skin off which changes their shade.

“They eat their skin most of the time and the name for this behaviour is ceratophagia.

“It allows them to recoup nutrients and calcium.

“The shedding process typically takes an hour or two.”
